Toronto City Council has adopted an ambitious strategy to reduce community-wide greenhouse gas emissions in Toronto to net zero by 2040 – 10 years earlier than initially proposed. The City’s 2040 target is one of the most ambitious in North America.
Here's what you can do to help:
Home Energy
The energy we use to heat, cool and power buildings is the biggest source of Toronto's greenhouse gas emissions. It accounts for over 50% of our city-wide emissions.
The City of Toronto and many organizations across the city are working to make our buildings to be designed and built to be near zero greenhouse gas emissions. And for greenhouse gas emissions from existing buildings will be cut in half, from 2008 levels. But we can't do it alone.
Transportation
Transportation accounts for 30% of greenhouse gas emissions in Toronto. To reach Toronto's TransformTO climate goals, we must electrify 30% of our vehicles in Toronto by 2030 and walk, cycle or take transit for 75% of our short trips. The City of Toronto is committed to creating infrastructure that will support this transition. We need your help to make changes in how we all get around the city.
Food & Waste
Modifying your lifestyle, including what you eat and what you buy, is one of the key changes you can make to address climate change. In Toronto, over 10% of our emissions come from the waste that we throw away.
To reach our net zero goals, we will divert 70% of residential waste from the City of Toronto’s waste management system by 2030. The City will also work to identify pathways to more sustainable consumption in City of Toronto operations and in Toronto’s economy.
Get Involved
We all need to work together to fight climate change. Get involved in your community by volunteering, subscribing to news, getting involved in local governance and meeting other like minded people in your neighbourhood.
